easyJet Holidays
easyJet wanted to create a dynamic new way to create your perfect holiday and they asked the Splendid team to help them create this new product.
The Brief
To create a website that allows users to create dynamic holiday bundles based around flights and hotels.
Our Solution
Building on the work we did for easyJet on the Vista Gadget we were asked to design a website for new brand easyJet Holidays. This flips the usual easyJet experience (flight extras) into choosing your hotel or holiday first then adding the flight to create one holiday bundle, you can then tweak the flight times to suit your preferences which dynamically affects the price.
We worked with Flow Interactive again on this project and had a longer design phase to conduct more detailed research with users, it was important to us to design the new experience to take into account the more emotional factor involved in choosing holidays. The users of the site needs a more visual approach and one that factors in location and destination information.
We followed our usual user centred design process over 14 weeks that included the following activities.
- In depth research with real users and stakeholders supported by expert heuristic analysis of existing travel websites
- Rapid interaction design and prototyping
- Testing concepts and functional prototypes with users
- A visual design process that extended the easyJet brand into a more sophisticated online experience, less orange and more focus on photography
- Development of standards compliant HTML and CSS and then integration with the easyJet development team
So after this process Splendid, with Flow Interactive, had designed a new website with the following features and functionality:
- The ability to create your perfect holiday based around the hotel that best suits your needs and travelling at time you want to
- The option of discovering new destinations and holiday options by themed groupings such as weekend away or family holiday
- The option of choosing and viewing your hotel on a map provided by Microsoft Virtual Earth, you can see how close the airport or tourist attractions the hotel really is!
- The ability to create a dynamic holiday bundle that you can change and filter based on personal preferences
The end result was a website that allowed easyJet to explore different methods of interaction with its customers and giving users a better user experience, and the team were great to work with as well. They really understood the problem and really pushed the idea forward.
